    embarrassed to be new

I have attended my very first meeting this week. One of the reasons it took so long was embarrassment at not knowing how to behave. I know that bowing when one enters the hall etc is obviously a show of respect, but I don't know exactly why or how to do it. I wish to participate fully and have become an associate member. Please help :-)

    Hi Lee Anne,

Everyone at Dhammaloka is very easy going and understanding. Just stick around and get used to the vibe and learn as you go along. I would not worry too much about the bowing etc.

Fundamentally you should only do that only when you wish to express respect and/or gratitude and not as conformative gesture. No one will bother you if you don't bow. Actually no one will bother you, try to convert you, that type of thing. The library is a good source of info as is our main site dhammaloka.org.au where there are articles, talks, videos. Make yourself a cuppa. Perhaps, join the Saturday beginners meditation class to experience what Buddhist practice is like.

I recall when I went there the first time, I was self conscious and worried I'd do something wrong. That feeling soon passed....anicca..impermanence..one of the key tenets of Buddhism :-)
